Memphis, Tenn. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Despite a match-high 15 kills from junior Stephanie Serna (San Antonio, Texas), the Knights dropped a 3-0 (18-30, 26-30, 31-33) match at Memphis Sunday afternoon in a Conference USA match-up at the Elma Roane Feildhouse.
With the loss, the Knights fall to 8-12 overall and 0-6 in the league. Memphis improved its record to 15-7 and 4-2 in C-USA action.
Erin Campbell (Kansas City, Mo.) had an all-around solid outing for UCF with 14 digs, eight kills, three block assists and two service aces. Serna hit .393 in the match, while freshman Kerry Brown (Elburn, Ill.) led the Knights with a .400 clip. Defensively, the Knights were led by junior Jenny Heppert's (Lawrence, Kan.) six blocks and freshman Kristen Petrasic's (Carrollton, Texas) 15 digs.
Despite the loss, UCF's numbers were almost identical to Memphis's. The Knights recorded four more assists and two more digs than the Tigers in the match, and were only one kill shy of the host's 43 kills.
In game three, with the score tied 26-26, the Knights and the Tigers traded kills back and forth on eight consecutive serves to make the score, 30-30, before Memphis ended the match with two-straight blocks from Kelsey Labrum.
Shelby Burton shined for the Tigers, hitting .333 with 11 kills and five blocks, while both Ashley Liford and Sarah Bury added nine kills.
The Knights return home on Tuesday for a mid-week match-up with The Citadel at the new UCF Arena. The match is schedule for 3 p.m., with a match between The Citadel and Bethune-Cookman to follow at 5 p.m.
