BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (www.ucfathletics.com) - A second half goal by junior Trey Gregory gave host UAB a 2-1 win over UCF in Conference USA men' soccer action at West Campus Field on Saturday night.

The Blazers (6-9-1, 1-5-0 C-USA) took an early 1-0 lead when junior Derek Rios recorded his fourth goal of the season on a shot from 22 yards in the 11th minute. Junior Frank Brown earned the assist.

Four minutes later, UCF even the score at 1-1. Freshman Matt Luzunaris (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./West Boca Raton HS) corralled a loose ball and found the back of the net from five yards. It was his third goal of the year.

Gregory scored the gamewinner in the 53rd minute, collecting the rebound from freshman Kevin Sawchak's original shot and sending it past UCF freshman goalkeeper Sean Johnson (Lilburn, Ga./Brookwood HS).

"I can't fault the effort of our players tonight," said UCF head coach Bryan Cunningham. "They played well for the full 90 minutes. It was just unfortunate that we were unable to equalize the game."

UAB owned an 8-6 advantage in shots, but UCF held a 9-4 margin in corner kicks. Both Johnson and the Blazers' goalkeeper Wes Johnson each made one save on the night.

"UAB played end-o-end as we did," said Cunningham. "This is our third game in a row that was decided by one goal. We just need the breaks to go our way."

The Knights take on in-state rival North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. before closing out the season at home against C-USA opponents South Carolina on Sunday, Nov. 4 and Marshall on Friday, Nov. 9.
