ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF baseball program is welcoming all Knight fans to come out to Jay Bergman Field Friday at 6 p.m. for an exciting evening on the diamond. The free event will be highlighted by a home run derby by the Rowdy Knights student support group and an eight-inning UCF intrasquad scrimmage.
"The Rowdy Knights have been so supportive of us and they make the atmosphere on game-days here at The Berg very exciting and so much fun," said assistant coach Bryan Peters. "So our biggest priority for Friday is that we wanted to give back to them for their loyalty. And for the players, it's going to be a little bit of a break from their daily routine, and it will be fun for them to change the pace up without compromising our competitiveness."
Gates will open at approximately 5:30 p.m. and UCF will take the field first with batting practice. The Rowdy Knights Home Run Derby will get underway as soon as B.P. comes to a close, and the UCF scrimmage wraps up the day's activities.
Friday marks the first opportunity for fans to come out to the ballpark to get a sneak preview of the 2008 squad. UCF brought in a recruiting class that ranked in the top 40 in the nation, while it is returning all eight starting position players, three key starting pitchers and its closer.
The Knights opened fall camp on Oct. 1 and wrap up the practice schedule in early November. UCF's 2008 season gets underway Feb. 22-24 with a three-game set against Florida A&M at Jay Bergman Field.
