Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF defensive end Bruce Miller was named the Conference USA Co-Defensive Player of the Week league officials announced on Monday, sharing the weekly honor with Houston safety Rocky Schwartz. Miller is the fourth Knight this season to earn a weekly honor from the league and it is the second time a Knight has shared the defensive honor with a Houston Cougar.
Miller posted a career-high nine tackles and two sacks as the UCF defense limited the Tulsa offense (ranked No. 2 in the country in total offense prior to the game) to a season-low 379 yards in a 44-23 victory at home on Saturday. Miller added a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry as the UCF defense caused Tulsa to turn the ball over a season-high four times.
Eight of Miller's nine tackles were solo efforts as he became the first Knight to register multiple sacks in a game this season. The Canton, Ga., native leads the team with three sacks this season.
Miller and Schwartz were honored along with Tulane senior Matt Forte (offense) and Memphis placekicker Matt Reagan (special teams).
Other Knights earning C-USA weekly honors this season were junior Kevin Smith (offensive on Sept. 3) and Michael Torres (special teams on Sept. 3) following UCF's season-opening 25-23 win at NC State. Junior Jason Venson earned the team's first defensive honor on Sept. 24 following a 56-20 victory over Memphis.
Venson was also the last UCF freshman to earn a C-USA weekly honor when he earned the award following a 31-28 victory over Rice on Nov. 19, 2005. Venson registered a career-high 15 tackles in the game as the Knights clinched the C-USA East Division title.
The 2007 campaign is serving as the Knights' first at Bright House Networks Stadium on campus. The Knights' next home game is against Marshall when the Thundering Herd visit Orlando for UCF's annual Homecoming contest. Tickets can still be purchased for that game by calling 407-UCF-1000.
