Newcomers Dominate for UCF Softball

Oct. 17, 2007

Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Even though the 2008 UCF softball season does not begin for another four months, the Knights hosted a pair of exhibition tournaments last weekend at the UCF Softball Complex, where they posted a 5-0-1 record over the six-game span. UCF registered victories over Indian River CC, Florida CC-Jacksonville, St. Petersburg CC, South Florida CC and Tallahassee CC, while tying with Manatee CC.

UCF's four newcomers proved they have what it takes to be Knights, posting the top four batting averages and number of hits for the Black and Gold on Saturday and Sunday.

Freshman Tiffany Lane (Moreno Valley, Calif.) hit .500 (8-for-16) with two doubles, a triple, four runs scored, two RBI, two stolen bases and a .579 on-base percentage over the weekend.

Fellow freshmen Abby McClain (Waterloo, Iowa) and Brittany Hipple (Venice, Fla.) batted .375 (6-for-16) and .357 (5-for-14), respectively, for the Black and Gold, both pounding out a double and scoring two runs apiece. Hipple also had two RBI and two sacrifice hits in the tournaments.

Redshirt junior and Santa Fe Community College transfer Marquita Council (Orlando, Fla.) registered a .385 (5-for-13) clip, while scoring six runs and stealing two bases.

Juniors Breanne Javier (Castaic, Calif.) and Shelly Frick (Jacksonville, Fla.) led the team with three RBI apiece.

Allison Kime (Brandon, Fla.), Ashleigh Cole (Pace, Fla.), Lexi Gresham (Fresno, Calif.) and Diana Rojas (Miami, Fla.) all saw time on the mound during the weekend, combining for a 0.54 team ERA and 31 strikeouts.

The Knights host two more tournaments this fall at the UCF Softball Complex with the first to take place on Oct. 21. UCF concludes its fall season with another tournament on Nov. 4.
