ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) -Playing at home for the first time this season, the UCF volleyball team won a pair of matches at the UCF Invitational on Thursday at the old UCF Arena. The Knights (4-5) defeated North Florida, 3-1 (30-26, 30-12, 18-30, 30-26), and swept Florida Atlantic, 3-0 (30-23, 30-23, 30-20).
In the win over the Owls, Kristen Petrasic (Carollton,Texas) totaled eight service aces, good for second on UCF's single-match register. The Knights, who hit .308 for the contest, finished with 16 service aces.
"Serving is pretty much the only controlled skill in volleyball," assistant coach Jenny Frank said. "You need to be mentally strong and Kristen demonstrated that tonight."
Erin Campbell (Kansas City, Mo.) led the Knights with 13 kills and Stephanie Serna (San Antonio, Texas) added 12 kills. Andrea Youngblood (Castle Rock, Colo.) recorded 37 assists in the win.
Florida Atlantic fell to 1-6 with the loss. No Owl finished with more than seven kills as the squad hit just .109 for the match.
Against North Florida, Serna paced the hosts with 12 kills. Campbell and Kelly Weaver (Port Orange, Fla.) both recorded 10 kills. Blaire Brueggemeyer (Burleson, Texas) had match-high 24 assists. Youngblood (Castle Rock, Colo.) added 20 assists.
The Ospreys fell to 0-7 with the loss. Kavie Sturch paced the team with 11 kills.
The Knights recorded 13 total team blocks.
UCF began the season with seven contests away from Orlando.
The Knights return to action on Friday, playing Central Michigan at 7 p.m. Admission to all UCF home matches is free.
