ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Less than a week after opening its 2007 fall campaign, the UCF men's golf team will be in action again this weekend, competing at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational. The 12-team, 54-hole event, which is being held at the Olympia Fields Country Club outside of Chicago, begins Sunday.
The field includes some of the nation's top teams: defending national champion Stanford, Arizona State, Duke, Florida State, Purdue, Tennessee and Texas.
Head coach Nick Clinard's lineup is highlighted by freshman Jhared Hack (Sanford, Fla./Circle Christian). Earlier this week, Hack finished tied for seventh (217, +1) at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate in Alabama, his first college event.
Senior Chris Anderson (Lake Mary, Fla./Seminole) will play this weekend after tying for 18th. Juniors Preston Brown (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) and David Johnson (Melbourne, Fla./Melbourne) and sophomore Nuno Henriques (Funchal, Portugal) round out the Knights' lineup. Brown and Henriques will be in action for the first time this season.
A junior-college transfer, Johnson carded a one-under 71 on the final day at Shoal Creek to conclude the event tied for 27th. Clinard's squad finished tied for seventh at Shoal Creek.
Illinois is hosting the tournament. Olympia Fields has been the site of 16 major championships, including the 2003 U.S. Open.
The squads will play two rounds on Sunday, before finishing the tournament on Monday.
