Atlanta, Ga. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF volleyball (0-2, 0-0 Conference USA) team dropped two matches Friday at the Georgia State Invitational despite solid outings from Blaire Brueggemeyer (Burleson, Texas/Arlington Grace Prep), Stephanie Serna (San Antonio, Texas/Birmingham-Southern) and Cassie Ramaekers (Blue Grass, Iowa/Indian Hills CC). The Knights fell just short in its season opening match against Fordham, 3-1 (26-30, 30-27, 29-31, 24-30), before host Georgia State came away with a 3-0 (26-30, 25-30, 22-30) win in game two.
Both Fordham (2-0) and Georgia State (2-0) went undefeated on the day.
"We had five freshmen on the floor tonight (including redshirt freshman Lauren Williams)," head coach Meg Colado said. "We are definitely making progress even though the scores are not indicative of that."
Brueggemeyer led the Knights with 49 assists, registering 20 in her collegiate debut against Fordham, before putting up 29 in the nightcap. The freshman also recorded 13 digs and four service aces on her first day on the job.
Serna paced the offense for the Black and Gold with a team-high 22 kills, while Ramaekers tallied 39 digs on the defensive side of the ball, including 27 against the Rams.
In match one against Fordham, Jenny Heppert (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State), Serna and Schanell Neiderworder (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) registered12 kills, 10 kills and 9 kills, respectively to lead the team.
Heppert and Williams (Lake Mary, Fla./Seminole) combined for 16 blocks, with Williams going up for 10.
The Knights return to action Saturday morning at 9 a.m. when they face East Tennessee State on day two of the Georgia State Invitational, before closing out the tournament with a match against Chattanooga at 4 p.m.
