ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - With seven freshmen on the roster, there is no denying that the UCF volleyball team will have a new look this season. Head coach Meg Colado's squad began its preseason camp on Aug. 4 and the Knights are using their practice sessions to come together as the team.
Senior outside hitter Schanell Neiderworder is one of four upperclassmen on the squad and has been impressed by the newcomers.
"They are fitting right in. I think practice has gone really well," she said after UCF's session at the Education Gym on Friday morning. "We have a longer preseason this year so we can mesh."
Neiderworder and libero Cassie Ramaekers are the only seniors on the team. Seven letterwinners from last year's squad return. UCF opens the 2007 campaign on Aug. 24, facing Fordham and Georgia State at a tournament in Atlanta.
For the freshmen, there is strength in numbers. Despite being in the early stages of preseason camp, the group has bonded.
"The seven of us are getting along really well," said rookie setter Blaire Brueggemeyer. "Seven coming in is a lot, but it is a strong group."
The unity is helping the freshmen adapt to the college game and stay upbeat during a grueling time of the year. Colado's team often practices twice a day and also spends time in the weight room.
"We all stay really positive and help each other out. It is not like you are the only freshman going through preseason," said Brueggemeyer. "We are all having to go through it."
The Knights will make their home debut on Sept. 6, facing North Florida and Florida Atlantic. Due to construction at the old UCF Arena, the team will play its matches at various sites, including the Education Gym.
