ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF volleyball head coach Meg Colado announced the Knights' 2007 schedule on Thursday and her team will play 13 matches at home this season. The Knights are entering their third campaign in Conference USA.
Colado's squad will make its home debut on Sept. 6 when the Knights face North Florida and Florida Atlantic as part of the five-team UCF Tournament. Central Michigan and Montana State are also participating in the event, which concludes on Sept. 8.
During the season, UCF will play three teams that participated in the NCAA Championship in 2006. The squad will face two of those teams at the Colorado Invitational, when it meets California (Aug. 31) and Colorado (Sept. 1). The tournament will serve as a homecoming for two Knights from Colorado - senior outside hitter Schanell Neiderworder (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) and sophomore setter Andrea Youngblood (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County).
"Our non-conference schedule will be a great challenge for our players," said Colado. "The schedule is designed to test the team and prepare us for the difficult matches that will come later in the season against Conference USA teams."
The Knights will play their home matches at the new Convocation Center on campus and the UCF Education Gym.
UCF begins the season on Aug. 24, facing Fordham and host Georgia State at a tournament in Atlanta. After hosting its own event, UCF heads to Tampa to play in a tournament hosted by USF (Sept. 13-14). In addition to playing the Bulls, the Knights will face George Mason and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the event.
The Knights open Conference USA play on Sept. 21, hosting Houston. UCF will host UAB, a 2006 NCAA Championship participant on Oct. 5, and will also play the Blazers in Birmingham, Ala. on Oct. 26.
UCF will conclude the regular season with back-to-back league contests against Southern Miss. After hosting the Golden Eagles in Orlando on Nov. 9, the Knights will face Southern Miss on the road on Nov. 11. Marshall will host the C-USA Championship in Huntington, W.Va., beginning Nov. 15.
The program's home, the UCF Arena, will be renovated during the 2007-08 academic year into a volleyball-only facility. The locations for each home match will be announced at a later date.
Seven letterwinners return from last year's squad and Colado will welcome seven newcomers to the program.
