Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF head coach and senior defensive end Emeka Okammor and junior running back Kevin Smith completed a quick 36-hour trip to New Orleans on Tuesday as the Conference USA Football Media Blitz came to a close at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in the Big Easy's downtown district.
The trip began on a Monday with a two-hour community service project as Conference USA and the NCAA partnered with the New Orleans Youth Football League to conduct a clinic with the league's 12 head coaches a pair of players from each school. More than 200 kids turned out as the coaches and players provided instruction on passing, receiving and tackling at the Willie Hall Playground.
Next up for the Knights was a C-USA Football Media Blitz live television show on CSTV hosted by Carter Blackburn and Brian Jones. The Knights' time slot was near the middle of the show, which aired live from 6-8:30 ET on Monday night and will be televised several times in its entirety throughout the next few weeks on CSTV.
Both the players and coaches enjoyed some Louisiana's best cuisine on Monday night in separate outings hosted by the Conference USA staff before closing out the session on Tuesday morning with the print and electronic media in attendance. The media in attendance numbered well over 100 members and all 11 cities in the league were represented by either print, electronic or radio entities.
The Knights will report for fall camp on Wednesday, Aug. 1, exactly a month away from their season-opening game at NC State on Sept. 1. The 2007 UCF football team hit the practice fields for the first time on Thursday, Aug. 2.
