ORLANDO, Fla - UCF senior Philip Michael Hall earned a promotion at his summer job. After spending his previous three summers as a counselor at area camps, the men's soccer standout became a camp director for Dreadhead Soccer Camps this year. He learned immediately that with the title comes a larger chunk of responsibility.
"On a daily basis, I have to make more decisions," said Hall, whose major is sports and fitness. "I not only have to teach the kids but also deal with their parents and any safety issues that might arise. I also make the decisions on what is covered in the daily training."
Previously, Hall worked at camps directed by the UCF coaching staff and served as a counselor at the Dreadhead Soccer Camps last summer. He learned of the opportunity when he picked up his younger sister from one afternoon and began chatting with the program's founder Kenny Bonnett Jr. Hall recently served as director of the camp at its Lake Mary Prep location where he also instructed a group of 10 children that ranged in age from nine to 12.
"It has been a great experience," said Hall. "Working as a camp director has given me a different perspective."
Once he finishes with the camps, Hall plans to work at a local gym in his hometown of Claremont, Fla. "I am really leaning toward a job in fitness rather than coaching," he said. "I'd like to work as a strength and conditioning coach or as a personal trainer."
As one of three seniors on the UCF men's soccer team, Hall's leadership skills are certain to be an asset when the Knights kickoff the 2007 season on Sept. 7 at the New Mexico Invitational. Their first home match is against Stetson on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.
