ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF Athletics Association and Tavistock Group announced the field for the fourth annual Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday and 16 of the 18 teams in the tournament participated in the NCAA Championship this past year. The three-day event begins Oct. 21 at Isleworth Golf & Country Club in Windermere.
Defending tournament champion Texas returns to face an impressive list of teams which includes 12 of the top 25 men's golf programs in the nation, according to the final 2007 Golfweek/Sagarin ranking. Stanford claimed the national title in June and will be competing at Isleworth for the second time.
"The strength of the field is by far the best of any tournament in the country and a testament to the event and the golf course," said UCF men's golf head coach Nick Clinard. "Tournament chairmen Jim English and Dick Nunis, director of athletics Keith Tribble, the Tavistock Group, the Central Florida Sports Commission and the staff at Isleworth have all been instrumental in the success of the event. We are all looking forward to a great tournament in October."
Last year, Texas won the event by 12 strokes with a team score of 876 (+12). Twelve of the teams in this year's field participated in the 2006 event, including runner-up Georgia. The Bulldogs return Brian Harmon, who won the individual medalist last year by one stroke with a three-round total of 216 (even).
Seven of the squads that will participate in the tournament finished in the top 15 at the NCAA Championship in the spring. Georgia ended the event in second and Georgia Tech finished eighth. South Carolina (T-11), Texas (T-11), Florida State (T-13) and Oklahoma State (15) were all among the top finishers at the national championship.
Originally designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay, with a re-design by Steve Smyers in 2003, Isleworth is a par-72, 7,544-yard course.
