UCF Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Receives C-USA Sportsmanship Award

July 9, 2007

Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) was selected as a recipient of a 2007 Conference USA Sportsmanship Award as announced Monday by C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky. The conference sportsmanship awards are presented to student-athletes, coaches or teams that perform an individual act of sporting behavior or generally conduct themselves with a high degree of good sportsmanship.

The tornado storms that hit Central Florida in early February left the Stetson rowing team, located in nearby DeLand, without boats for their upcoming season. After learning of this tragedy, the UCF SAAC organized a fundraiser to aid its neighbor. In just one week, Knights solicited funds from fans at six home contests and raised $750 to help the Hatters in their requisition of new boats.

"The notion that the UCF SAAC found time out of its hectic scholastic and academic schedule to help fellow sportsmen in a time of need is both heart-warming and inspiring," Stetston SAAC President Jeff Smoraglinolo said. "Your true colors have shined brightly. Not only are you great competitors, but great people as well. Your sportsmanship and altruism will not soon be forgotten."

The UCF SAAC is comprised of at least two representatives from each varsity team whose mission is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting communication between student-athletes and athletic department administration, protecting the voice and well-being of student-athletes on the local, conference and national levels and fostering a positive student-athlete image campus-wide, and in the Orlando community through service.
