IRVING, Texas (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF senior Matt Horwath (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary) and sophomore Kiko Vazquez (Sebring, Fla./Sebring) were both honored on Monday when Conference USA named its all-academic team for baseball. The pair of Knights were among the 11 student-athletes recognized for their work in the classroom.
Horwath is an accounting major who has made 34 starts for the Knights this year and is hitting .341. Vazquez is majoring in physical education. The first baseman paces UCF with a .366 batting average. Both players were named to the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll earlier in the spring.
To be eligible for the team, student-athletes must have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and be a starter or key reserve on their team. This marks the first year that the league has recognized academic standouts from each conference-sponsored sport.
UCF was one of four C-USA teams to place two members on the all-academic squad. A league-best three Rice players were recognized.
The Knights, who are in their second campaign in C-USA, will make their debut at the conference championship on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. in Greenville, N.C. The Knights, who are seeded eighth, will meet No. 1 Rice.
