UCF Men's Golf Remains Tied For 11th At NCAA East Regional

Alpharetta, Ga. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF men's golf team remained in a tie for 11th despite improving its team score by five strokes in the second round of the NCAA East Regional at the Golf Club of Georgia. The Knights teed off from No. 10 in the morning wave on Friday and were able to post a 294 (+6) to give them a two-day total of 593 (+17).

The Knights currently share 11th with Georgia State, while only three strokes separate those two squads from seventh place, which is held by Coastal Carolina (590, +14). The top 10 teams in the field advance to the NCAA Men's Golf Championship in Williamsburg, Va., on May 30-June 2.

"We played good for the opening 11 or 12 holes, but struggled towards the end of our round," UCF head coach Nick Clinard said. "We are still in position to advance though. I told the guys to come out relaxed tomorrow with a `nothing to lose' type attitude."

Georgia, the No. 1 ranked team in the country, overtook host Georgia Tech for the top spot on the team leaderboard after firing a 288 (E) to finish two rounds of play at 574 (-2). The Bulldogs are part of a Southeastern Conference trio that sits a top the team standings. Florida (575, -1) and Auburn (577, +1) are second and third, respectively. The Tigers posted the low round of the day with a 284 (-4).

Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale maintained his lead on the race for medalist honors with a 70 (-2). Tringale has a two-round total of 137 (-7) and leads by two strokes over Georgia's Brendon Todd. The host Jackets (578, +4) fell to fourth-place in the team race.

Junior Giwon Suh (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) shot a 72 (E) to lead all UCF golfers in round two play. Suh shot a 40 going out, but came in with a 32 on his back nine, including an eagle and three birdies to post a level-par score in his second 18 holes of the tournament.

Freshman Nuno Henriques (Funchal, Portugal/The Pendleton School) led the team with five birdies en route to a 73 (+1). Suh and Henriques are the top-ranked Knights on the individual leaderboard as they share 34th with nine other golfers.

Sophomores Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) and Preston Brown (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) carded scores of 74 (+2) and 75 (+3), respectively in their second rounds. Forest had four birdies in his round.

Freshman Mike Stern (Miami, Fla./Killian) struggled in his second round posting a 79 (+7) after leading the team with a 71 (-1) during Thursday's opening round.

The final round of the East Regional is set for Saturday.
