UCF Men's Golf Shares 11th After First Round of NCAA East Region Championship

May 17, 2007

Alpharetta, Ga. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF men's golf team is in a tie for 11th with playing companion Chattanooga following the first round of the NCAA East Regional at the Golf Club of Georgia. The Knights were paced by freshman Mike Stern (Miami, Fla./Killian) whose even-par round of 72 included five birdies.

The host Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets lead the 27-team field after posting a 284 (-4) in the opening 18 holes. The Jackets' Cameron Tringale and Chesson Hadley stand on top of the individual leaderboard after respective rounds of 67 (-5) and 68 (-4). Georgia Tech leads another Peach State institution as Georgia ranks second after a 286 (-2).

Stern took advantage of the par fives on the Lakeside Course (Par 72, 7,017 yards) as he birdied three of the four to stand in a tie for 15th in the individual standings.

"We did not putt very well today, but we hung in there mentally," UCF head coach Nick Clinard said. "We will have to hit our wedges better, chip a little better and definitely putt better to have a chance at advancing."

Freshman Nuno Henriques (Funchal, Portugal/The Pendleton School) got off to a slow start, but was three-under par in his last five holes to register a 75 (+3). Henriques made the lone eagle on the day for the Knights, carding a three on the par-five 18th to close out his round.

Junior Giwon Suh (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) and Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) each posted a 76 (+4) in their opening rounds. Forest birdied No. 18 to help the Knights remain in a tie with the Moccasins.

Sophomore Preston Brown (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) recorded a 77 (+5) on Thursday to round out the scoring for the Knights.

Rounds two and three of the regional are set for Friday and Saturday. The top 10 teams and the top two individuals from non-advancing teams qualify for the NCAA Men's Golf Championship in Williamsburg, Va., May 30-June 2.
