Rain Halts UCF's Game at No. 30 East Carolina in Fifth Inning

May 12, 2007

Greenville, N.C. (www.ucfathletics.com) - A possible one-out rally in the top of the fifth inning came to an abrupt halt Saturday, as the UCF baseball team saw its game at No. 30 East Carolina suspended due to rain. The Pirates were ahead 7-1 before the Knights placed two aboard in the fifth. That was when the rain came down in buckets, forcing both teams to have to resume the game Sunday at 11 a.m.

Saturday marked the first time that weather caused a delay or suspension in the UCF schedule this season.

The series finale, originally scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m., will now get underway approximately 30 minutes after the suspended game wraps up. East Carolina (33-17, 11-7) claimed game one of the Conference USA series vs. UCF (24-27, 5-14) Friday when it walked away with an 8-6 victory.

The Knights took a 1-0 lead after the top of the first Saturday, but the Pirates scored at least once in the next four innings to make it 7-1. Kiko Vazquez extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a single in the first, while Tyson Auer was 3-for-3 with a RBI when the contest was stopped. Kyle Sweat started on the mound for the Black and Gold and lasted 3.0 innings with three strikeouts.

Meanwhile, ECU's Ryan Wood also had three hits and swiped three bases for the Pirates' offense. Starter Dustin Sasser had given up seven hits and struck out four through 4.1 innings before having to retreat to the dugout.
