Texarkana, Ark. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF men's golf team had its season extended on Monday as the NCAA Men's Golf Selection Committee announced the field for the 2007 NCAA Championship. The Knights were among the 27 teams selected to participate in the East Regional in Alpharetta, Ga., on May 17-19.
This marks the third time in the last four years that the Knights advanced to NCAA regional play. "It has been an up and down year for us, but we have a talented team and I am glad the NCAA recognized that," sixth-year head coach Nick Clinard said. "We deserve to be in the field. We have made it to regional play three of the last four years, but this time it is time to take that next step to nationals."
UCF will be the No. 15 seed and are among 19 at-large teams in the regional that will be played at The Golf Club of Georgia and hosted by Georgia Tech. Joining the Knights from Conference USA will be league runner-up UAB. Georgia, Clemson and Florida are the top three seeds, respectively.
The 27-team field also includes eight conference champions, including No. 5 seed and host Georgia Tech from the Atlantic Coast Conference. ACC co-champion Virginia Tech will also be in the field as the Hokies are the No. 16 seed. Other conference champions include: No. 4 seed Coastal Carolina (Big South), Charlotte (Atlantic 10), Chattanooga (Southern), Old Dominion (Colonial Athletic), Jacksonville State (Ohio Valley), Louisiana-Lafayette (Sun Belt), Eastern Michigan (Mid-American).
The Knights have advanced to the NCAA Championship on three different occasions (1990, 1991 and 1992) since moving to Division I-A in 1984 and this is their 10th regional appearance overall, including their ninth in the East Regional.
The top 10 teams from the three regional championships will advance to the championship finals being held at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. Also, the top two individuals from non-advancing teams will be invited to play in the championship.
