Photo Gallery: A Closer Look at Schierer in Action
UCF sophomore Dinah Schierer discusses her cheerleading background, representing UCF and her experience as American Cheerleader magazine's cover girl.
How did you become involved in cheerleading?
I started cheering when I was in fifth grade at Crystal Lake Elementary School because my older sister was a high school cheerleader. I really looked up to her and I wanted to do everything she did. I joined my school's team and have been hooked ever since.
Why did you choose UCF?
I've always been interested in UCF because of the great cheerleading reputation that our school holds. We always finish as one of the top teams at the national competition every year.
What is your favorite part of being a UCF cheerleader?
I love cheering our football and basketball games. The energy our crowd has is so amazing and it's really exciting to cheer in front of them.
What has been your favorite UCF cheerleading memory thus far?
Wow, that is a tough question. I have so many memories with our team but I'd have to say watching our nationals team take home the first place trophy this year was absolutely amazing!
How were you first approached as a finalist for the cover of American Cheerleader?
I found out when [UCF cheerleading coach] Linda [Gooch] told me about it one day over a phone call. She told me that American Cheerleader had been looking at me and that they wanted to meet me and do a photo shoot that coming week. I was so excited and really honored that they even considered me.
What has been the best part of the American Cheerleader experience?
I love being able to be a role model for all of the young cheerleaders that read the magazine. I hope that many of the readers will read my issue and be inspired by my cheerleading experience.
How has your cheerleading experience influenced your life outside the gym?
Cheering here at UCF has opened up so many opportunities for me. Most importantly for me though would be that through cheerleading at our school I have met all of my closest friends who have helped me make it through so many hard times. My teammates have become my Orlando family and I couldn't imagine having my college experience with out them.
