DeLAND, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF men's tennis team won the doubles point, but Stetson rallied to post a 5-2 victory over the Golden Knights on Thursday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. UCF (12-9) sophomore Brock Sakey (Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze) earned the lone singles win for the Golden Knights.
UCF opened the match by taking two of three doubles tilts versus the Hatters (17-6). Junior Sinan Sudas (Adana, Turkey) and sophomore Jimmy Roesch (Melbourne, Fla./Eau Gallie) clinched the doubles point for UCF with an 8-5 victory at No. 3 against Peter Dzuba and Hicham Laalej.
The Golden Knights' other doubles victory came at No. 2. Senior Ener Gursoy (Adana, Turkey) and freshman Johan Beigart (Vaxjo, Sweden) eased to an 8-2 win over Serguei Boulanov and Joey Jones.
Playing at the No. 5 singles position, Sakey defeated Jones, 6-3, 6-4. Laalej posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sudas at the top spot. Against Beigart at No. 2, Stetson's Marcus Echtler rallied for a 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 triumph.
Roesch was forced to retire at No. 6 due to an injury and the Hatters' Danai Stamp picked up the win (6-7, 6-2, ret.).
The Golden Knights play their final home contest of the year on Saturday, hosting Jacksonville at 11 a.m. at the UCF Tennis Complex.
