DeLand, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - With seven punch outs Wednesday in DeLand, Allison Kime set UCF's career strikeout record with 405, and she made the night even more memorable in a 1-0 Golden Knight (28-16) victory over Stetson (30-14). Not only did the hurler break the strikeout record, but she pitched her third career no-hitter in the process.
A native of Brandon, Fla., Kime (17-6) surpassed the previous mark of 403 strikeouts set by Dottie Cupp in 2003, when she ended the fifth inning of Wednesday night's match-up by getting Amy Peters to whiff on strike number three. Kime needed only 390.2 innings to set the new record in just her second year as a Golden Knight.
The Knights scored the only run of the game in the sixth inning on a RBI single from Amber Lamb. Lamb had two hits in the game to lead all batters.
There was no offensive action in the game until the fourth inning when Lamb reached base on an infield single to the shortstop. But with two away, a fielder's choice ended the inning for the Knights. In Stetson's half of the fourth inning it put two runners on with an error and an intentional walk, but Kime got out of the pickle with her fourth and fifth strikeouts of the game.
The Black and Gold finally plated a runner in the sixth inning when Kacie Feaster dropped a bunt single in front of the plate and Cici Alvarez moved her to second with a single of her own past the shortstop. Lamb did what she does best and hit a RBI single down the left-field line to bring Feaster around from second base. The run put the Knights ahead, 1-0.
The Hatters threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning after Andrea Migliori hit a long ball over the fence, just foul. With that, Kime intentionally walked the first baseman and the moved worked as the UCF hurler retired the next three batters to seal the memorable victory.
UCF is off for the Easter weekend before they travel to Jacksonville on April 10 to take on the JU Dolphins. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. For the latest news and information on the Knights, tickets or apparel log on to www.ucfathletics.com - the official site for UCF varsity sports.
