Houston, Texas (www.ucfathletics.com) - Five runs in both the third and seventh innings did in the UCF baseball team in Houston, where the Knights dropped a 10-1 decision to No. 6 Rice Friday. Tyson Auer, Dwayne Bailey and Eric Kallstrom each had two hits for the Knights, who fell to 18-21 on the season and 1-9 in Conference USA play.
A single in the top of the fourth allowed Auer to stretch his hitting streak to 14 games, and he finished his evening 2-for-4, his 16th multiple-hit outing of the season. UCF starting pitcher Jaager Good tossed 6.0 innings, surrendering five runs on seven hits to move his record to 3-4.
Rice's Ryan Berry (6-2) gave up one run through 7.0 innings of work, striking out four in the process. His performance helped the Owls stay atop the conference standings by improving to 31-11 overall and 11-2 in C-USA action.
Each team went quietly in the first and second innings, but it was Rice who was the first to light up the scoreboard in the third. A one-out walk on a 3-2 pitch to Danny Lehmann set up Brian Friday's 1-2 double to left center, driving in Lehmann all the way from first. Tyler Henley added another RBI, lacing a two-out double to the right-center gap, and Joe Savery pushed it to 3-0 thanks to a single up the middle. Still with two down and now the bases loaded, Diego Seastrunk ripped a two-run single through the left side to help Rice take a 5-0 lead into the fourth.
UCF had the chance to strike back in the fourth. A base hit to center by Auer gave the Knights their first runner, while Kiko Vazquez notched a single and an error with Chris Duffy batting filled the bags. However, Ryan Richardson popped out in foul territory and Kallstrom struck out to end the inning.
The Knights did get another opportunity in the seventh with runners at the corners and one out. Bailey was able to bring in Kallstrom by sending a slow grounder to third, making it 5-1. But that was as close as they would get. The Owls struck for five more in the bottom half off the UCF bullpen, earning four walks three singles and two wild pitches to bring their final advantage to 10-1.
The three-game series between the Knights and Owls resumes Saturday with first pitch slated for 3 p.m. ET. For the latest news and information on the Golden Knights, tickets or apparel log on to www.ucfathletics.com - the official site for UCF athletics.
