HOUSTON (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF men's tennis team concluded its season on Friday morning, falling 4-3 to fourth seeded UAB in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Championship at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. The No. 5 Knights (12-12) opened the match by winning the doubles point, but UAB won four of six singles tilts to take the win.
Kruno Despotovski clinched the victory of the Blazers (13-7), defeating UCF sophomore Norman Alcantara (Mexico City, Mexico), 7-6, 6-3, at the No. 4 singles position. The Knights earned a point at the top spot after junior Sinan Sudas (Adana, Turkey) posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Thomas Weiss.
Freshman Johan Beigart (Vaxjo, Sweden) claimed the other singles victory for UCF at No. 3. Beigart defeated Tim Bauer (7-5, 2-6, 6-2).
Alcantara and sophomore Tarek Ben Soltane (Tunis, Tunisia) secured the doubles point for the Knights with an 8-4 triumph over Despotovski and Adrian Tollstam at No. 1. Facing Weiss and Alex Emery at No. 3, Sudas and sophomore Jimmy Roesch (Melbourne, Fla./Eau Gallie) recorded an 8-1 win.
UAB will face either top seed Tulsa or No. 8 East Carolina in the semifinals on Saturday morning. The championship is being played on the Rice campus.
