Tulsa, Okla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The No. 8 seed UCF women's tennis team recorded a flawless 4-0 win over No. 9 seed East Carolina in the first round of the Conference USA Championship on Thursday. The win advances the Knights to the second round of the tournament, where they will face tournament host and top seed Tulsa at 11 a.m. Eastern Friday.
UCF improved its record to 12-7 with the win.
The match began with two UCF doubles victories as sophomore Elvira Serrot and junior Anna Yakimchenkova defeated ECU's Varinia Soler and Mireia Gol, 8-5,at the No. 1 spot. Soon after, sophomore Kenza Belbacha and junior Kyla McNicol clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win over Luiza Borges and Hannah Priest at the No. 2 position.
Singles play began with another Serrot victory over Soler, 6-2, 6-2, improving Serrot's record to 11-7 on the spring in the No. 1 spot.
Senior Becky Gordon earned the next UCF point at No. 6 with a 7-5, 6-0 win over ECU's Alex Smith and Yakimchenkova sealed the deal at No. 3 when she downed Brooke Walter in straight sets 6-4, 6-0. The Pirates fell to 19-10 with the loss.
