Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Thanks to his best outing in a collegiate uniform at No. 17 Florida April 10, sophomore Kyle Sweat was named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career. The Apopka, Fla., native shut out the Gators in 8.0 innings of work, which matched a career-high, to help the Knights claim a 6-2 upset victory in Gainesville.
In what was his fourth start of the season, Sweat dominated the Gators even though rain had threatened to postpone the game. He retired the first seven batters he faced before giving up a double in the third inning. Sweat then allowed a single in the fourth and two walks in the fifth, but that would be the only runners he put on base. To close his evening, Sweat sat down the final 10 batters as he pitched a perfect sixth, seventh and eighth innings to get the win.
In all, Sweat gave up only two hits in 8.0 frames, striking out three to improve his record to 3-2. He is the only UCF starting pitcher this year to last 8.0 innings, as he also accomplished the feat in his last start March 26 against Harvard.
Sweat's award is the third by a Golden Knight this season, as Kiko Vazquez (Hitter of the Week, March 12) and Tyson Auer (Hitter of the Week, March 19) also received the weekly honor.
Sweat and the Knights (18-19) are back in action Tuesday with a 6 p.m. contest at USF. They will then travel to No. 5 Rice this weekend for a three-game C-USA set.
