April 14, 2007

Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF men's golf team posted a 292 (+4) in the second round of the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational to remain in 12th-place in the team standings. The Knights struggled during their front nine, which was holes 10-18, but a strong finish saw the four golfers who counted toward the team score combine to shoot eight-under on holes 1-9 at the Karsten Golf Course (Par 72, 7,057 yards) in Tempe, Ariz.

Oregon extended its lead in the team standings to five strokes with another strong round, backing up a 277 (-11) in the opening with a second round score of 279 (-9). The Ducks (556, -20) have a five shot lead on Texas A&M (561, -15). Oregon's Derek Sipe continues to lead the race for medalist honors with a two day total of (131, -13).

UCF freshman Nuno Henriques (Funchal, Portugal/The Pendleton) led the Knights with six birdies in his second round and the freshman added an eagle on No. 2 to post his 72 (E). Henriques made his 15-foot eagle putt after driving the green on the 323-yard hole.

Sophomore Preston Brown (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease), who also carded a 72 (E) and freshman Mike Stern (Miami, Fla./Killian), who shot a 74 (+2) on Saturday, are tied for 36th and are the top Knights on the individual leaderboard.

Sophomore Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) shot a 42 on his front nine, but shaved 10 strokes off that total with a 32 (-3) on his back nine to card a 74 (+2). Forest had five birdies in his round.

Junior Giwon Suh (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) is tied for 46th after a second round score of 74 (+2). Suh, who made four birdes, was even par through 16 holes, but a double-bogey on No. 8, his 17th hole of the day cost him two strokes.

The three-day tournament concludes on Sunday with the final round.
