Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF men's golf team is tied for 12th following the first round of the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. The Knights posted a 291 (+3) during the opening of three rounds at the Karsten Golf Course (Par 72, 7,057 yards).
Oregon claimed the first round lead in the field of 16 teams as the Ducks fired a 277 (-11) to lead No. 4 Southern California by one stroke (278, -10). Derek Sipe was a big reason Oregon grabbed the lead after he carded the best round of the opening day with a 65 (-7).
UCF freshman Mike Stern (Miami, Fla./Killian) led the Knights on the day after posting a 71 (-1). Stern shot a 33 on the back nine, including birdies on three of his last five holes, to help finish his round in the red. He is tied for 22nd in the individual standings.
Junior Giwon Suh (Orlando, Fla./Olympia), who eagled No. 10 and added a pair of birdies carded a 72 (E) and is tied for 33rd. Sophomore Preston Brown (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) shot a 73 (+1) and is tied for 33rd. Brown opend his round birdying two of the first five holes.
Sophomore Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) posted a 75 (+3) to count towards the Knights' team score on day one. Freshman Nuno Henriques (Funchal, Portugal/The Pendleton School) shot a 76 (+4) in his opening 18 holes.
The three-day tournament continues on Saturday with round two and concludes on Sunday with third round play.
