ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF men's tennis team eased its way to victory past UNC Greensboro on Wednesday, 7-0, at the UCF Tennis Complex. The No. 73 Golden Knights are 5-0 in the month of March and own a 9-3 record this season.
UCF started off the day with wins at all three spots in doubles. Paired together for the first time were sophomores Jimmy Roesch (Melbourne, Fla./Eau Gallie) and Danny Colon (Jacksonville, Fla./Englewood). The two rolled to an 8-3 victory at the No. 3 spot over Jason Steinhorn and Taylor Befus.
Ranked 55th nationally in doubles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, sophomores Brock Sakey (Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze) and Norman Alcantara (Mexico City, Mexico) cruised to an 8-3 win at No. 1 over Andrey Bubnov and Arsel Kumdereli. Sakey and Alcantara are 11-1 on the season and have won their last eight decisions.
Senior Sinan Sudas (Adana, Turkey) and freshman Johan Beigart (Vaxjo, Sweden) finished the sweep with a win against Martin Redelinghuys and William Adeimy, 8-1, at No. 2.
UCF also took victories at all tilts in singles play. Sakey earned UCF its second point on the afternoon with duplicate 6-0 wins at No. 4 against Jason Steinhorn. Beigart improved to 11-1 overall and 6-0 at No. 3 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Arsel Kumdereli. The win for Beigart also continued his win streak to six in a row.
Sudas clinched the match for the Golden Knights with a 7-5, 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot against Andrey Bubnov. Sophomore Tarek Ben Soltane (Tunis, Tunisia) posted a victory over Martin Redelinghuys at No. 2, 6-3, 7-5. Ben Soltane is also sporting a six-match winning streak.
Roesch earned the sixth point for UCF by knocking off Ian Conchar with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5. The last match of the afternoon was won by senior Ener Gursoy (Adana, Turkey) who posted a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 6 against William Adeimy. Gursoy's last match came almost a month ago on Feb. 11 against Miami.
The match against UNC Greensboro (4-7) concluded the eighth consecutive match at home for the Golden Knights. In that span, UCF knocked off two nationally-ranked opponents (Utah and UAB). UCF also posted a perfect 3-0 record in the UCF/Conference USA Shootout, defeating Memphis, UAB and East Carolina.
The Golden Knights will be on the road for the next two matches. UCF will face Clemson in Coral Gables, Fla. on March 15 at 2:30. The Golden Knights then travel north to Boca Raton, Fla. to take on Florida Atlantic on March 17 at 11 a.m.
