IRVING, Texas (www.ucfathletics.com) - After helping the Golden Knights to a pair of impressive victories, UCF junior Kyla McNicol (Winnipeg, Manitoba) has earned Conference USA Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Tuesday. McNicol was a perfect 6-0 as UCF went 2-1 during the week.
With sophomore partner Kenza Belbacha (Casablanca, Morroco), McNicol won all three doubles matches out of the No. 2 position. Against No. 35 Denver, the duo defeated Julia Bauregger and Kyla Iwinski, 8-2, then followed it up in a 4-3 win over No. 53 Dartmouth by getting past Lindsay Winingham and Natalie O'Rourke, 8-5. McNicol and her partner completed the week in doubles by shutting out Memphis' Dara Toulch and Katie-Mary Outhwaite, 8-0.
In singles play, McNicol dominated at the No. 4 spot. She opened with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Denver's Rachel Sackmaster, and then posted a come-from-behind win against Dartmouth, defeating Kerry Snow, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. McNicol capped off the perfect performance versus Memphis with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Outhwaite.
The Golden Knights recorded a 4-3 win over Dartmouth and blanked Memphis, 7-0.
For the dual-match season, McNicol is 10-2 in singles action and 9-2 with Belbacha in doubles.
McNicol's honor marks the second-straight week that a Golden Knight has received league accolades. On March 20, sophomore Elvira Serrot (Madrid, Spain) garnered the conference player of the week award.
UCF (8-6) returns to the courts on Saturday, facing host New Mexico State in Las Cruces.
