Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF men's golf team turned in a record day to grab a four-shot lead following the first round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Invitational in Awendaw, S.C. The Golden Knights posted a new school record for single round scoring by shooting a 270 (-14) at the Par 71, 7.261-yard Bulls Bay Golf Club.
The Knights and No. 21 Florida State (274, -10) separated themselves from the rest of the 15-team field as Baylor and No. 24 Wake Forest are nine shots back of the Seminoles at 283 (-1).
Sophomores Preston Brown (Ponte Vedra, Fla./Nease) and Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) led the charge for the Knights as both players posted a 66 (-5) to share the top spot on the individual leaderboard by one shot. Both scores were personal-bests at UCF for Brown and Forest.
Freshman Nuno Henriques (Funchal, Portugal/The Pendleton School) trails his teammates by just one stroke after he also turned in a career-best round of 67 (-4). The trio of Brown, Forest and Henriques each had seven birdies during their respective rounds. Henriques, who is tied for third with two Florida State golfers, closed his round with four-consecutive birdies.
Junior Giwon Suh (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) was the fourth UCF golfer at even par or better as he carded a 71 (E). Suh, who is tied for 19th, had five birdies on his card. Freshman Mike Stern (Miami, Fla./Killian) posted a 74 (+3) on his first round.
The previous single day scoring record of 271 was set by the 2003-04 UCF squad at the Fall Beach Classic in Gulf Shores, Ala. (Oct. 27, 2003).
