Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Up against one of the top pitchers in the country, the UCF baseball team (1-2) was unable to solve a strong TCU pitching staff in a 10-1 loss to the No. 15 Horned Frogs (1-0) Friday at Jay Bergman Field. Brandon Romans finished with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, while Dwayne Bailey swiped two bases in the loss.

TCU's Jake Arietta (1-0) got the victory for the Horned Frogs, giving up one run in 5.0 innings while tacking on five strikeouts. UCF starter Kyle Sweat (0-2) went 2.1 innings and surrendered six runs and adding two strikeouts. Matt McClung was stellar out of the pen, lasting 4.2 scoreless innings and allowing only one hit.

After taking the lead in both games of the opening series against FIU Feb. 3-4, UCF fell behind in the top of the first against TCU. With a man on second, Andrew Walker laced a 2-2 pitch to center for the game's first run, Matt McGuirk followed with a two-out triple down the right-field line and Keith Conlon singled up the middle to make it 3-0.

Walker and Austin Adams delivered in the third with back-to-back doubles to lead-off the frame, pushing the lead to 4-0. A walk and a sacrifice bunt later and Carmine Giardina came out of the pen for his first appearance as a Golden Knight. However, he walked the first two batters and added a wild pitch before he got the second out of the inning. After a hit batsman and another walk, McClung entered the game and got the third out on a grounder to third.

UCF was not going quietly against Arietta early in the game as it put two runners aboard in both the second and third innings, but could not convert on its chances. It then loaded the bases with one out in the fifth and Romans put the Knights on the board with a high infield chopper back to the mound, scoring Bailey from third.

That was all TCU would allow, though, as it finished with three more runs in the ninth for the final 10-1 margin.

The two teams continue the three-game series at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. For the latest news and information on the Golden Knights, tickets or apparel log on to www.ucfathletics.com - the official site for UCF athletics.
