PHILADELPHIA (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF men's tennis team earned its first victory of the year on the road and over a ranked opponent on Friday, defeating No. 51 Penn at the Levy Pavilion, 4-3. UCF is now 3-1 all-time against the Quakers.
The Golden Knights (2-1) took their first point of the day when they won two of the three doubles matches. Junior Sinan Sudas (Adana, Turkey) and freshman Johan Beigart (Vaxjo, Sweden) battled their way to an 8-3 victory at the No. 1 spot against Jason Pinsky and Eric Riley.
The second win, which gave UCF the point, came from sophomores Brock Sakey (Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulfbreeze) and Norman Alcantara (Mexico City, Mexico). The pair took an 8-4 victory at the No. 2 spot over Justin Fox and Jonathan Boym. Sakey and Alcantara improved to a perfect 3-0 record on the season. Sophomores Tarek Ben Soltane (Tunis, Tunisia) and Jimmy Roesch (Melbourne, Fla./Eau Gallie) were up 6-4 in their match, but ended up conceding the last four games to fall 8-6 at No. 3 to Brandon O'Gara and Adam Schwartz.
UCF dropped its first three spots in singles action, but went on to round out the last three spots with wins. Beigart defeated Riley at the No. 4 spot 6-1, 7-6 (3). At No. 5, senior Ener Gursoy (Adana, Turkey) won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, against Adam Schwartz. Alcantara took the last spot in singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Brandon O'Gara.
The Quakers dropped to 1-1 on the season.
UCF returns to action in New Jersey on Sunday when it faces Princeton at 10 a.m.
