ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Senior guard Francine Houston (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) scored 12 points and freshman guard Shante Cummings (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Gorretti HS) added 11 as the UCF women's basketball team fell to visiting Conference USA rival Marshall, 64-46, at UCF Arena on Thursday night.
After going down 41-21 at halftime, the Golden Knights (8-20, 3-12 C-USA) played well on both ends of the court to start the second period when a lay-up by senior forward Keunta Miles (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./South Broward HS) sparked a 10-0 run. The UCF defense held Marshall without a field goal for the first seven minutes, forcing four turnovers. In that time, the hosts shot 40% from the field and kept the Thundering Herd to 25%.
The strong effort allowed the host team to cut Marshall's advantage to 41-31 on a three-pointer by Houston at 14:58 before the Thundering Herd (15-13, 8-7 C-USA) regained control.
Marshall jumped out 12-4 in the opening minutes of the game and extended their lead throughout the first half, shooting 45.5% from the floor. The Thundering Herd finished the game at 42.9%, while UCF shot 28.8%.
For Marshall, sophomore guard Megan Withrow led all players with 15 points, while senior center Modupe Ishola scored 13 points and added 14 rebounds.
The Golden Knights conclude the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 24 when they play host to East Carolina at 2 p.m. The 2007 Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship, presented by Aeoropostale, takes place in Tulsa, Okla. from March 1-4. The tournament bracket, including all seeding and game times, is scheduled to be released on Sunday, Feb. 25.
