ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF men's tennis team will open the Conference USA Shootout against Memphis on Thursday. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. at the UCF Tennis Complex.
The C-USA Shootout, hosted by UCF, will also include East Carolina and UAB.
Last year, UCF hosted the event for the first time in program history. The Golden Knights (4-3) posted a perfect 3-0 record, defeating Southern Miss 6-0 in the final match of the tournament. Junior Sinan Sudas (Adana, Turkey) and freshmen Norman Alcantara (Mexico City, Mexico) and Tarek Ben Soltane (Tunis, Tunisia) were all victorious in the match against the Golden Eagles.
In their last match, the Golden Knights prevailed on Sunday over No. 70 Utah, 5-2. The win was the second over a ranked opponent for UCF.
Sophomores Alcantara and Brock Sakey (Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze) won at the No. 2 doubles spot, 8-1, over Amit Maharaj and Ryan Schlachter. Alcantara and Sakey have won three straight and are 6-1 on the season as a pair.
The other set of sophomores, Ben Soltane and Jimmy Roesch (Melbourne, Fla./Eau Gallie) took an 8-4 victory at No. 3 against Wes Hancock and Timmy Allin. The win earned the Golden Knights the doubles point.
UCF will face UAB on Friday at 1 p.m. and close out the C-USA Shootout against East Carolina on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
UCF is 2-2 all-time against UAB and owns a 1-0 all-time record against East Carolina.
Admission is free to all UCF home matches.
