Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF women's tennis team picked up some impressive performances at No. 5 and No. 6 singles Saturday, but could not overcome Jacksonville (3-2) in a 5-2 loss at the UCF Tennis Complex. Senior Becky Gordon (Tampa, Fla.) and junior Kyla McNicol (Winnipeg, Man.) provided the Golden Knights with their two points on the afternoon, as the Black and Gold dropped to 0-2 on the season.
"Not winning the doubles point always hurts," said head coach Patricia Allison. "Jacksonville is very solid at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in singles and they are a great team overall. I was happy with our results at the five and six positions. And Megan and Anna also gave tremendous efforts for us today."
Gordon and junior Jennifer Carati (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles, but the Dolphins cruised at the top two positions to take the first point of the match.
Returning to the court in singles, Gordon had no trouble at No. 5, posting a 6-2, 6-3 win over Fernanda Carrero. McNicol also came through by giving up only two games in a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Cristina Paiva-Flor at No. 6 Jacksonville, however, was able to walk away with wins at the top four spots in singles.
UCF stays at home for a Monday afternoon match-up with Florida International. Action will get started at noon at the UCF Tennis Complex. For the latest news and information on the Golden Knights, tickets or apparel log on to www.ucfathletics.com - the official site for UCF athletics.
