Feb. 7, 2007

ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF Athletics Association, Inc. and Golden Knight student-athletes come together on Sunday, February 11 to celebrate the 21st Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

Kicking off the festivities at the UCF Track and Soccer Complex at 11 a.m. is an interactive event that features demonstrations from UCF teams and meet-and-greets with UCF female student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Lunch, provided by Dominos Pizza, will be served before the event concludes with the UCF women's basketball game vs. Rice, tipping off at 2 p.m.

The event at the UCF Soccer and Track Complex is limited to 250 participants and tickets are still available for $5 and include sports demonstrations, lunch and admission to the women's basketball game. To reserve tickets, please contact Chris Bain at (407) 823-1801.

For those only wishing to attend the basketball game, admission is $3. The first 300 fans admitted to the contest will receive t-shirts and are invited to stay for a post-game autograph session with the women's basketball team.

"We are proud to be a part of this special day and celebration," said UCF head women's basketball coach Gail Striegler. "The event celebrates how far women and girls have come in sports and also looks toward all of the opportunities that are available for female athletes today and in the future."

UCF's celebration is one of more than 1,000 taking place around the country to recognize National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Originally chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1986, the day was set aside to recognize the past and current achievement by female athletes and encourage female participation in sports and fitness.
