ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF women's basketball team caps off a three-game road swing at SMU on Thursday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. Eastern. It is the Golden Knights' second trip to Moody Coliseum as the Mustangs hosted the 2006 Conference USA Championship there, but it is the first meeting between the two schools on SMU's homecourt.
UCF (6-15, 1-7 C-USA) is looking for a victory after dropping decisions at UTEP and Tulane last weekend. Despite the two losses, senior guard Celeste Hudson (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) continues leave her mark on the program. At the 12:41 mark of the first period against Tulane, she became the 10th player in UCF history to score 1,000 points in her career. She already appears on the school's career lists for most assists (250), steals (141) and three-point field goals made (175).
The Golden Knights have one of the top three scoring defenses in the league, allowing 63.5 points per game. Meanwhile, seniors Francine Houston (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) and Keunta Miles (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./South Broward HS) lead the team in scoring as they each average at least 12 points per game.
SMU (11-9, 3-5 C-USA) has lost its last four contests, including most recently an 81-65 decision at Houston on Jan. 27. Four Mustangs players finished the afternoon against the Cougars scoring in double digits as freshman guard Jillian Samuels registered a game-high 22 points. Junior center Jillian Dodds and junior guard Katy Cobb each added 12 points, while freshman forward Brittany Gilliam had 11.
Dodds is ranked among Conference USA's top 10 players in both points (15.3) and rebounds (7.4) per game. Both Dodds and Cobb are dangerous at the foul line where they have a combined shooting percentage of 83.1%.
A graduate of SMU, head coach Rhonda Rompola has posted an overall record of 281-185 (65.8%) in 16 seasons at the helm.
UCF returns home to host Tulsa on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m.
