GAINESVILLE, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF men's tennis team traveled to Gainesville on Wednesday and lost to the No. 15 Gators, 5-2, at Ring Tennis Complex. The Golden Knights fall to 1-1 on the season. The match marked the season opener for the Gators.
UCF had two victories in singles play. The first win came when freshman Johan Beigart (Vaxjo, Sweden) took a victory from Billy Mulligan at the No. 4 spot, 4-6, 6-0 and 6-0. Senior Ener Gursoy (Adana, Turkey) took the second victory for the Golden Knights at the No. 5 spot, 3-6, 6-3 and 6-4 against Dan Cash. Sophomore Tarek Ben Soltane (Tunis, Tunisia) fell 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot to Greg Oulette, who is ranked 16th nationally. Junior Sinan Sudas (Adana, Turkey) also had a tough battle and lost at the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-4, against Nestor Briceno who is ranked 60th nationally.
In doubles, sophomores Norman Alcantara (Mexico City, Mexico) and Brock Sakey (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) won at the No. 2 position against Jordan Dolberg and Mulligan, 8-6. Beigart and Sudas lost 8-6 at the No. 1 spot against Oulette and Briceno.
UCF now travels to face a pair of Ivy League programs this weekend. The Golden Knights play at No. 50 Penn in Philadelphia on Friday and then meet Princeton in New Jersey on Sunday.
