ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF women's basketball team is looking for a second consecutive victory when the Golden Knights (6-12, 1-4 C-USA) conclude their three-game homestand against Conference USA rival Southern Miss (10-8, 4-1 C-USA) on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. The Lady Eagles currently share second place in the league standings with UTEP, while UAB sits atop the conference.
The Golden Knights gained confidence after earning a 77-62 victory over Memphis a week ago. Senior Keunta Miles (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./South Broward HS) recorded the fourth double-double of her career with a team-high 22 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in the contest.
The game also marked the best offensive output by the Golden Knights this season as they recorded a season-high in both points (77) and field-goal percentage (47.4%).
Southern Miss has won its previous two games, dropping Memphis, 76-55, and UAB, 72-54, last weekend. Leading the Lady Eagles to victory in both games was sophomore guard Amber Eugene, who sank 23.5 points per contest in the series.
Eugene is one of three Southern Miss players averaging double figures in scoring. She has posted a team-high 17.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per outing. Sophomore guard Kendra Reed has 16.6 points followed by sophomore forward Emer Foley with 15.7 points and 7.9 rebounds per game.
The Golden Knights and Golden Eagles have met eight times previously with Southern Miss holding an 8-0 advantage in the series. In the teams' most recent meeting on Dec. 31, Southern Miss escaped with a 58-57 win thanks to a buzzer-beating three-point basket from sophomore guard Kendra Reed. Senior guard Francine Houston (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) led UCF with 16 points, while Reed had 24 for the Lady Eagles.
UCF will be running several promotions during the game. At halftime, one lucky fan will have a shot at winning $10,000 in the "Get Coke Cash Crazy!" challenge sponsored by Coca Cola. One UCF student will receive a $250 scholarship from the Student Government Association as the SGA Fan of the Game.
