Jan. 19, 2007

ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF women's track and field head coach Marcia Mansur-Wentworth announced on Friday that former Pittsburgh assistant Waddie Freeman has joined the Golden Knights' staff as a volunteer assistant.

"To have someone with credentials like Waddie's is a great asset to our community," said Mansur-Wentworth. "We are excited that he is willing to give his time and expertise to our program."

Freeman was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Pittsburgh for five seasons, where he helped guide the women's team to the 2004 Indoor and Outdoor Eastern College Athletic Conference titles and a runner-up effort in the 2004 Indoor and outdoor BIG EAST Championships. The Panther cross country team placed eighth at the 2001 NCAA Regional, its highest finish ever, and also produced the program's first NCAA national qualifier in 2002.

During his time at Pitt, the Panthers had 12 athletes established new school records and nine qualified for the NCAA's.

As recruiting coordinator, Freeman brought top-ranked recruits to Pitt, including a 2004 women's class that was ranked eighth by Track and Field News. The men's class that same year included three sub-4:08 milers, two of the top five hurdlers in the U.S., a top 10 ranked javelin thrower and one of the top junior pole vaulters in the world.

Prior to his experience at Pitt, he served four years in the U.S. Army, earning the rank of sergeant as a military intelligence electronic warfare analyst.

A resident of Oviedo, Fla., Freeman holds a bachelor's of science degree in business and U.S. Track and Field Level I and Level II coaching certifications.
