ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Senior forward Keunta Miles (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./South Broward HS) scored a team-high 18 points and senior guard Francine Houston (Bradenton, Fla./southeast HS) added 13 as host UCF fell to UAB, 66-55, in Conference USA women's basketball action on Friday night at UCF Arena.
After a strong first half enabled the Blazers (9-7, 4-0 C-USA) to take a 41-24 lead at intermission, the Golden Knights (5-12, 0-4 C-USA) put together a 12-6 run to open the second period and continued to battle back. Houston's three-pointer at 9:18 brought UCF within 13 points then Miles sank a layup at 5:22 to knock down the deficit to 60-49.
It wasn't enough to overcome a solid first half by UAB, who started the game on a 10-2 run, that included eight by senior guard Carmen Guzman. A layup by Miles at the 13:08 mark cut the visitor's lead to 13-9, but UAB regained its momentum despite UCF's best attempts.
The Golden Knights finished the night shooting 37.5% from the floor, while UAB sank 44.2% overall and 40% from behind the arc. UCF put up 19 of its points off turnovers, but the Blazers edged the home team by a 37-34 margin on the glass.
The league's top scorer, Guzman led all players with 29 points and her teammate junior forward Diamond Rogers had a game-high 10 rebounds. Both Miles and freshman forward Kristin Thomas (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater HS) pulled down a team-high seven boards for the Golden Knights.
UCF continues its home stand against Memphis on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. and Southern Miss on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. Tickets for home contests are available by calling (407) UCF-1000.
