ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - After opening the 2006-07 Conference USA campaign with three road games, the UCF women's basketball team returns home for league action, taking on rivals UAB and Memphis this weekend. The Golden Knights (5-11, 0-3 C-USA) face the Blazers (8-7, 3-0 C-USA) on Friday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. before playing host to the Tigers (3-13, 0-3 C-USA) on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m.
Despite dropping a pair of games on the road to Marshall and East Carolina last weekend, UCF still boasts two of the conference's top 20 scorers. Senior guard Francine Houston (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) ranks 14th, averaging 12.3 points per game, while senior forward Keunta Miles (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./South Broward HS) is 17th with 11.8 points per outing. Miles is also listed among the top 20 rebounders in C-USA.
UAB brings an undefeated league record to Orlando after posting wins over SMU and Tulsa a week ago. Although the Blazers are one of the top scoring team's in the C-USA, averaging 71.7 points per outing, their defense has allowed opponents to score an average of 71.9 points per game. They also own the second highest field goal percentage at 43.5%.
UAB's roster features the league's top scorer in senior guard Carmen Guzma, who is putting up 21.7 points per game. Behind her with 14.5 points and a team-high 6.4 rebounds per outing is junior forward Diamond Rogers. Junior forward Christon Ingram owns the conference's second-best shooting percentage from the floor.
With seven previous meetings between UCF and UAB, the Blazers hold a 6-1 series lead that includes a 90-78 win in Birmingham, Ala. and a 74-65 victory at UCF Arena last year. The Golden Knights' win - 89-82 - came in Orlando on Jan. 19, 1989.
Friday's game is part of the national "Take a Kid to the Game Day" campaign. Children under the age of 14 are free with a paid adult admission.
