Incoming UCF Women's Basketball Recruiting Class Receives Second National Ranking

Jan. 10, 2007

TAMPA, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The 2007-08 UCF women's basketball recruiting class was recently listed No. 75 of 150 schools ranked by the All-Star Girls Report. It marked the second time that head coach Gail Striegler and her staff were commended for their efforts as The Collegiate Girls Basketball Report position the Golden Knights' incoming class at No. 41 earlier in the season.

"It is a great honor to be recognized for the work that our staff has done on the recruiting trail," said Striegler, who is in her eighth season at the helm of the program. "We are intent upon bringing in the type of athlete that provides us with a foundation on which to build our program."

During the early signing period, UCF received commitments from five freshmen, including guards Angelica Mealing (Decatur, Ga./Avondale HS), Marshay White (Rochester, N.Y./School of the Arts) and Shunice Hardy (Lithonia, Ga./Stephenson HS), forward Stacy Griffith (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend HS) and center Emma Cannon (Rochester, N.Y./School of the Arts). Center and junior college transfer Wanyna Brown (Albany, Ga./Seward County CC) also inked with the Golden Knights.

At No. 67, Brown received the highest individual ranking from the All-Star Girls Report, while Cannon was listed in the top 135. Both Mealing and Hardy were among the top 250 players.

"Cannon is the highlight of this class. She is a very athletic power forward who can put up big numbers," said ASGR analyst Bret McCormick in his report. "Overall, UCF did a great job of filling out its roster, making this their best class ever."

The All-Star Girls Report considers several aspects when determining its rankings, including the quality of the incoming recruits, the needs of the program and the potential for the program's success with the recruits. Past success and the quality of players returning are also taken into account.

The Golden Knights open up their Conference USA home schedule against UAB on Friday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. in the UCF Arena. Tickets for home contests are available by calling (407) UCF-1000.
