UCF Names John Skladany Defensive Coordinator

Dec. 4, 2006

Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF Head Coach George O'Leary announced the hiring of John Skladany to fill the role of defensive coordinator on the Golden Knights' football coaching staff on Monday. Skladany joins the staff from Iowa State University where he spent the previous 10 seasons as the Cyclone's defensive coordinator.

"We are very fortunate to bring in a man of John's quality to be a part of our coaching staff at UCF," O'Leary said. "His prior successes will help bring this program to the level we want it to be."

During his 10 seasons with the Cyclones, the defense improved dramatically and his 2005 unit ranked 12th nationally against the run and 35th in total defense. Iowa State advanced to five bowl games during his tenure.

"I have known Coach O'Leary for a quite a while and this is a great opportunity for me to come in and work with a man of his stature in this profession," Skladany said. "The potential at UCF is remarkable with the new facilities, the recruiting base and to be in a city as vibrant as Orlando."

Prior to his stint at ISU, Skladany spent time as a collegiate assistant coach at Colorado State (1993-95), helping the Rams to a pair of WAC titles and Holiday Bowl berths. He also coached at Northern Arizona (1990-92), Ohio (1985-89), Maine (1981-84) and the United States Merchant Marine Academy (1980).

Skladany also spent two seasons coaching at the prep level at Utica High School (Ohio) after earning his master's degree as a graduate assistant at Ohio University. He played collegiately at Central Connecticut State where he earned a bachelor's degree.
