ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Seeking to extend its winning streak to four games, the UCF women's basketball team caps off its homestand against Iona on Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. in UCF Arena. Earning another victory will give the Golden Knights some confidence before embarking on their sophomore campaign in Conference USA, which begins on Dec. 31 at Southern Miss.
UCF (4-8) is coming off three impressive wins over in-state rivals Bethune-Cookman, North Florida and Florida A&M. During the streak, the Golden Knights outscored their opponents by 185-133 and shot 68-for157 (43.3%) from the field. They also beat their competition on the glass with a plus-15 rebounding margin.
After using seven different starting lineups during the season, the coaching staff seems to have found the right combination in guards Francine Houston (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS), Celeste Hudson (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) and Lashaunda Slade (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./South Broward HS), forward Keunta Miles (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./South Broward HS) and center Jackie Akers (Naples, Fla./North Fort Myers HS). With that quintet on the court at the opening tipoff, the Golden Knights have posted a record of 3-1.
Bringing a 6-5 record to Orlando, Iona has not played a game since beating Wagner, 74-67, on Dec. 17. In that game, senior forward Martina Weber netted a team-high 13 points and senior guard Toni Horvath added 12 to give the Gaels the victory.
The squad's top scorer, Weber has averaged 13.7 points per outing, while senior guard Tiara Headen has posted 10.8 points per game and leads Iona in rebounds with 5.8 per game.
The Golden Knights and Gaels are meeting for the first time on the hardwood.
