DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Senior forward Keunta Miles (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./South Broward HS) sank a game-high 17 points to power the UCF women's basketball team over Bethune-Cookman, 62-35, on Wednesday night at Moore Gymnasium. The victory marked the 100th career win for UCF head coach Gail Striegler.
"It's one of things that you really don't think about and honestly, I didn't even know it was approaching," said Striegler, who is in her seventh season at the helm. "I was just happy to get the win because it was a true team effort."
After Miles knocked down eight points in the opening minutes to jumpstart the UCF offense, the Golden Knights (2-8) continued to build upon their advantage on a 15-0 run late in the half. The defense, meanwhile, held B-CC (2-5) without a field goal for almost nine minutes.
In the period, UCF shot 13-for-32 (40.6%) while limiting the Wildcats to 6-for-26 (23.1%). The Golden Knights effort on both ends of the court earned them a 34-15 lead at the intermission.
Bethune-Cookman put up an 8-4 run to start the second, but UCF retained its double-figure lead. A layup by freshman Kristin Thomas (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater HS) increased the Golden Knights advantage to 20 points with 10:47 remaining as they finished the game on an 18-7 run.
On the game, UCF went 24-for-52 (46.2%) from the floor, while B-CC hit 14-of-53 (26.4%). The Golden Knights owned a 48-29 advantage on the boards.
In addition to Miles' 17 points, senior guard Francine Houston (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) contributed 12. Sophomore guard Traci Fountain had 10 points for the Wildcats.
Next up, UCF plays host to North Florida, Georgia State and Florida A&M in the UCF Holiday Classic. The Golden Knights open the tournament vs. UNF on Monday, Dec. 18 before facing FAMU on Tuesday, Dec. 19. Both games tip off at 7 p.m.
