ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF women's basketball team hits the road for the first time in December as the Golden Knights visit Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday for 7 p.m. tipoff at Moore Gymnasium. The squad plays only two of its seven games this month away from the UCF Arena.
The Golden Knights (1-8) are coming off an impressive effort against No. 25 Florida State on Saturday. They went up as much as 21-6 midway through the first period and led 35-33 at the half before the Seminoles rallied in the second period for a 75-66 win. UCF shot a season-high 44.8% from the field on the night, while FSU hit 53.6%. Senior guard Francine Houston (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) was one of four UCF players that finished the contest scoring in double figures as she sank a game-high 18 points. Senior guard Celeste Hudson (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) contributed 16 points and junior guard Amber Long (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork HS) added 14.
After leading the Golden Knights in scoring over the past two outings, Francine Houston regained the top spot on the UCF stat sheet, averaging 12.6 points per game. One of the reasons for her continued success is her talent for knocking down three-pointers. Entering the Wednesday's contest, Houston has hit 20 of 51 attempts (39.2%) from behind the arc.
Bethune-Cookman enters Wednesday's game with a 2-4 overall record after earning a 57-40 decision over in-state rival North Florida on Dec. 9. Senior guard Tristan McCray recorded a game-high 18 points and hit 7-of-10 attempts from the floor to lead the Wildcats to the win.
Senior forward Cassandra Caccagno leads the team as she averages nine points per outing, while McCray has posted 5.8 rebounds per game.
The Golden Knights own a 9-4 record against Bethune-Cookman in series history, but the Wildcats have won the previous two meetings during UCF head coach Gail Striegler's tenure. The most recent contest ended in a 63-61 overtime win for B-CC in Daytona Beach, Fla. on Dec. 12, 2000. UCF's last victory was a 61-35 decision on Dec. 3, 1999.
UCF's next home game is against North Florida on Monday, Dec. 18 as part of the UCF Holiday Classic.
