ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF men's tennis head coach Bobby Cashman announced on Thursday that Pensacola's Blaze Schwartz has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) and will join the Golden Knights in the fall of 2007. Schwartz is in his senior year at Washington High School.
This past spring, Schwartz reached the Florida Class 2A state semifinals for the second-consecutive year. Along with Washington teammate Rory Beck, he advanced to the state doubles championship match.
Following the season, Schwartz was named the Pensacola News-Journal Boys Tennis Athlete of the Year, in addition to being a first-team all-area selection.
"Blaze's best tennis is in front of him. He is a complete player at a young age," said Cashman. "We are excited that he will be joining our program. In addition to being a great athlete, Blaze is a solid student who was a great future in front of him."
Schwartz is currently listed in the top-30 in the United States Tennis Association's Florida junior rankings. In doubles play, he is ranked in the top-15.
Schwartz will join Brock Sakey (Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze HS), another player from the Pensacola-area, on the Golden Knights. Sakey was the Conference USA Freshman of the Year in 2006.
UCF opens the 2007 spring campaign on Jan. 27 at home against Bethune-Cookman. For the latest news and information on the Golden Knights, tickets or apparel, log on to www.ucfathletics.com - the official site for UCF athletics.
