ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - After playing its last three games on the road, the UCF women's basketball team returns home to play host to Georgia Southern on Friday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. in UCF Arena. It is the first of seven games the Golden Knights will play on a December schedule that includes five home contests.
The Golden Knights (1-6) are coming off their Thanksgiving trip to the Bahamas, where they competed in the Lucaya Division of the Junkanoo Jam. After dropping the first game to No. 15 Baylor by a score of 78-48, UCF also lost to Virginia, 76-47, in the consolation game on Nov. 25.
Senior forward Keunta Miles (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./S. Broward HS) remains the team's scoring leader with 10.7 points per game and is followed by senior guard Francine Houston (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) with 10.3 points an outing. Freshman forward and Orlando native Kristin Thomas (Edgewater HS) averaged a team-high eight rebounds.
Georgia Southern brings a 3-5 record to Orlando after beating South Alabama, 54-48, on Tuesday night. Two players finished the game scoring in double figures as junior guard Shawnda Atwood recorded a team-high 11 and freshman guard Whitney added 10. Junior guard Tiffany Brown pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. Brown leads all Eagles' players with 12.4 points per game.
The Golden Knights have met the Eagles 15 times during the history of the two programs, but never during UCF head coach Gail Striegler's era. Georgia Southern owns an 11-4 advantage in the series, but the Golden Knights won the last contest, 86-75, during the 1994-95 season.
Beginning with Georgia Southern, the Golden Knights play five of their seven December games a home in the UCF Arena. They play host to in-state rival Florida State on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 5:30 p.m. before traveling to Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday, Dec. 13.
UCF also serves as host for the UCF Holiday Classic on Dec. 18 and 19, which features North Florida, Florida A&M and Georgia State. On Dec. 28, the team takes on Iona College at home before hitting the road for their conference debut at Southern Miss on New Year's Eve.
Tickets for home contests are available by calling (407) UCF-1000. For the latest news and information on the Golden Knights, tickets or apparel log on to www.ucfathletics.com - the official site for UCF athletics.
